I'm pretty much a sent...It's a funny thing. I'm pretty much a sentimentalist and a nostalgist. I like life-affirming art and I hate cynical art. I also love Christmas and I buy into all the 'warm fuzzies' that surround that holiday. One of the things I like about Christmas is that people who generally hate nostalgia, tradition, ritual, quaintness, sentimentality etc. are won over for once in the year.<br /><br />And yet...I LOVE the bleakness of Gremlins, including the story of Santa caught in the chimney. This kind of black comedy, almost utterly nihilistic, really appeals to me. There's something gleeful and purgative about it.<br /><br />Anti-corporate and anti-consumerist social commentary seems to have been a strong feature of eighties cinema, quite remarkably (or perhaps not) for the decade of deregulation.Maolsheachlannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09406722311993627528noreply@blogger.com
