thank you for fixing...

Instead of writing a lot here in the blog today, I am finally fixing the goofs page on Groundhog Day’s IMDb page.

INSERT: Clouds moving swiftly as time passes in a clichéd manner.

Come back a while later—started when the movie did and right now Phil is robbing the armored truck, just for a frame of reference—and I wonder what to put here. I was going to copy and paste the corrected version of the page. But, apparently, it has to be approved by IMDb’s editors.

(Perhaps I will update this entry with the copy and paste when the page updates.)

If you like, in the meantime, you can go read my post from over 100 days ago in which I checked on every goof, many with screencaps… though they were not from a nice HD copy, so maybe I should replace them.

And, since there’s still a bit of movie to go today, I think I’ll wander over to Wikipedia.

INSERT: Some more clouds, only a little less clichéd.

My first correction is this:

Eventually, Phil becomes despondent and tries more and more drastically to end the time loop; he gives ridiculous and offensive reports on the festival, abuses residents, eventually kidnaps Punxsutawney Phil and, after a police chase, drives off a high overlook into a quarry, evidently killing both himself and the groundhog.

Changed to:

Eventually, Phil becomes despondent and tries more and more drastically to end the time loop; he gives ridiculous and offensive reports on the festival and eventually kidnaps Punxsutawney Phil and, after a police chase, drives off a high overlook into a quarry, killing both himself and the groundhog.

Phil never abuses any residents. He does punch Ned once, but I wouldn’t call that “abuse.” And, the “evidently” at the end there was unnecessary.

The next one was trickier:

When Phil explains the situation to Rita, she suggests that he should take advantage of it to improve himself. Inspired, Phil endeavours to try to learn more about Rita, building upon his knowledge of her and the town each day.

Rita does not suggest he improve himself. And, Phil’s learning about Rita comes before this. I settled on the following:

When Phil explains the situation to Rita, she spends the day with him. Inspired by her positivity, Phil endeavours to improve himself.

I also removed the notion that he learned Italian while, reluctantly, leaving in the notion that he learned French.

Next, I corrected the following:

Rubin had also originally envisioned Andie MacDowell's character Rita reliving the day with Phil, and portrayed the pair as being stuck together in the time loop for far longer than the film showed, possibly for thousands of years (Phil tracked time by reading a page of a book each day and had managed to read through the entire public library).

Nowhere have I seen Rubin suggest Rita was supposed to be in the time loop with Phil. Hell, in his first revision—which I have yet to get my hands on—Rita had a boyfriend (present in Punxsutawney), and the ending to the original script was Rita now in a loop of her own on February 3rd. And, the books were in the bed and breakfast, not the library. Correcting this paragraph was problematic, though, as there was nothing to replace the time loop stuff, so I deleted it outright.

My last edit is the iffy one. I’m not sure if it will be allowed to stay. Here is what I added to the bottom of the “Legacy” section:

In August 2013, Robert E. G. Black began The Groundhog Day Project[42], a year-long blog in which he watched the film every day and blogged about the content of the film as well as topics inspired by the film.
