Started the day with Blumhouse's Truth or Dare , finishing it with The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human , after a nice game night. Will probably return to Top Secret! tomorrow. In the meantime, thoughts.... Regarding Truth or Dare , the idea works, but the execution drags a bit. Oddly, I think it would work better in a longer form, let the events--and characters--breathe a bit. And, not bother with jump scares; it's not that kind of horror film but it insists on having a few anyway. In context of the Truth or Date game going on, jump scares can literally have no affect on the plot, and do have no affect on the plot. So, they feel cheap. I imagine a Netflix miniseries instead, but the characterization and depth I imagine really wouldn't be the thing that usually comes from Blumhouse. Mating Habits , on the other hand, might end up being good. But, I am instead thinking that this week has been very strange here at the Groundhog Day Project . Jim & Andy got me h...

I've mentioned before in this blog the sound effect I call Wilhelm's Car Horn. I'm watching This Is Us right now (the episode after the Super Bowl one--I got a little behind on tv with classes starting and then olympics stuff to watch) and they just had a Wilhelm's Car Horn. Randall is learning to drive, almost runs a STOP sign and a delivery truck swerves out of the way while honking. Try that some time. Swerve your car abruptly while honking. Even if you could manage to do both at the same time, you wouldn't. Not in the moment. This sound effect was already on my mind because I was thinking about writing about the movie I saw this morning-- Game Night --and their use of Wilhelm's Car Horn was just one of the little details that annoyed me. That movie isn't bad. The plot moves along nicely, and there are a few good laughs. But... And, here is where an interesting thought struck me. I wrote last week about Black Panther , and I said the movie "is...

Board game finished, just a couple weeks until Day 365. And, some speech team folk were over tonight--still here actually--to play some games. It is 1:07 AM. I'm starting to feel like there is nothing left to say. Which seems wrong. There is always more to say. Always. ... ... Or not. Perhaps if we'd played Groundhog Day: The Board Game tonight, but we were too busy with a few rounds of We Didn't Playtest This at All , a round of Zombie Dice , Carcassonne , Tsuro , a couple long rounds of Munchkin , and now Cards Against Humanity . I will have to get my kids to try out the Groundhog Day board game again tomorrow. In the meantime, Groundhog Day was entertaining today... a lot of reciting lines along with the film, a lot of complaining about Rita (from both me and my daughter Saer). Some talk (with my sister Bobbie) about dessert for the Day 365 party. Going with some thematic links to the film. ... It isn't that it is late. It isn't that the year of Gro...
