so this will be the last time we do the groundhog together

A couple mishaps but we just rolled with it. That’s the short description for the Day 365 party. The waffles didn’t work out, pretty much because I hadn’t used my waffle maker in a while and forgot about getting the surface oiled just right (and I probably needed to compensate for the blueberries added to the recipe with some dry ingredients). And the projector, which I had tested out twice at home—even watched Groundhog Day projected big on the living room wall last week—decided not to work when darkness fell and it came time to watch the movie. But, we crowded into my sister’s living room instead and watched the movie on DVD—the easiest way to roll with the punches is to be prepared with a DVD copy in your bag… (Well, that may not apply to all punches.) Anyway, showed off my LEGO Gobbler’s Knob, ate some good food, flapjacks made by my daughter Hayley, sticky buns, white chocolate cheesecake, fudge, and chocolate pie with almonds and marshmallow topping (thus being a Rocky Road p...

Watching Boyhood this morning, and a few times there were things I expected might happen that didn’t. The movie—if you don’t know it—was filmed over 12 years and evokes a sense of real life more than the Hollywood-constructed life. A boy doesn’t turn into a man in a single summer that lends itself easily to film—at least not all the time. It takes years. But, anyway, those moments. For example, Mason camps out with some other teenager boys at a house under (mostly done) construction and they’re drinking beers and breaking bits of wood, kicking them while another boy holds them. And, they also throw a saw blade into a spare bit of what looks like sheetrock. So, the end of the scene, oldest boy is going to punch a board held by the one kid who doesn’t want to drink, he’s holding it right in front of his face, and that saw blade is in the wall behind him. In a scripted film—especially a Final Destination film—this is a setup for a horrible injury and a lesson learned about going out ...

Late Sunday night in Woodstock, with no plans to head into the square again before driving to the airport Monday morning, I realized I had neglected a location marked on my downtown map… this one: See it on the right. I had briefly walked past the spot where Phil steps in front of the moving truck but that was on the trek to Cherry Street during the second tour, and that particular spot is not part of the tour, and I didn’t even notice where we were… at the time. Realized it later but neglected to get back. So, late Sunday night, I knew I was headed into the square one more time before I left. Monday morning, I got shots in both directions (north and south) at that corner. Also, I parked right where Larry parked the van. Aside from the library photos, today’s post should exhaust, finally, my collection of photos from Woodstock. First, some random stuff (a couple of which did get on Twitter but haven’t been in this blog yet… I don’t think). First, the Groundhog Day pin ma...

Back to photos, and still Saturday, because the symposium was Saturday. That’s Craig Krandel, member of the Inner Square Committee and announcer for the symposium and the official breakfast. And, I met him Saturday morning at bowling. The audience, of course. And, Danny Rubin: After the symposium, Rubin autographed little movie posters. I stuck around on the stage, met a few of the more obsessive fans (like Kyle Sweeney) and talked a bit with Mitchell Olson (the host of the symposium). I wrote my blog that day at the bar in the Pour House, just a few feet from this: The next morning, it was cold but there was no more snow falling. And, of course there was the prognostication. Then, the official breakfast at the VFW. Craig mentioned me early on. But, there was breakfast service, the high school girls singing group Premium Blend, and a polka band playing before I got to go on stage to kick off the Groundhog Day trivia contest. I sat at a ...
